White Lies is a new performance work that will unfold at RedLine’s Annual Resident Artist Exhibition, “Near in the Distance” curated by Nicole Caruth. Near in the Distance is the first exhibition in RedLine’s 2020 series entitled “Futurism: Afro & Beyond,” a lineup of exhibitions and programs inspired by the cultural genre known as Afrofuturism. The 2020 resident artist exhibition features works that explore important issues of our time, including surveillance, cultural erasure, environmental degradation, gender equity, and productivity. The exhibition considers the social and cultural forces that shape our lives now and influence fears and hopes for the near future.

White Lies focuses on two unassumed daily factors in my life: whiteness and surveillance. Google searches, airport screenings, emails, facial recognition, Facebook posts, exist as white noise, a constant invisible force on the periphery. What if the technology of the cloud, the physical invasiveness of surveillance, and the imprint of white privilege were foregrounded. What white lies do I tell to feel safe and secure? The work features sound design by Ben Coleman and is informed with collaborator Kayla Hamilton.
