SUMMARY:Suspended Disbelief | Live Performance
DESCRIPTION:Suspended Disbelief\nArtists: Chris Bagley\, Laura Ann Samuelson\, and Kate Speer \nMedium: Performance + Video + Live Mixing \nHuman bodies\, ladders\, sequins\, fog\, rope\, harness\, carabiners\, plywood\, fabric\, plexiglass tank \nSuspended Disbelief is a search party for changing states of matter. We are working with live performance\, video projection\, bodies\, ladders\, roof hatches\, sequins\, fog\, rope\, harness\, carabiners\, plywood\, fabric\, and a plexiglass tank\, because we want to understand something new about the impossible relation between emotion and motion. By funneling these changing states through dynamics of above and below\, inside and outside\, and appearance and disappearance\, we may locate the tethers that ground our realities. You can follow the status of the search via a mixed video projected within the plexiglass tank that translates motion/stillness on the roof and in/through the roof portal. Only with the complete stop of motion can disappearance be achieved. \nPart of RedLine’s 2021 Annual Resident Artist Exhibition \nChromatic Cogitations: Rhythm Reboot\nCurated by Rosie Gordon-Wallace \nNOVEMBER 12\, 2021 – JANUARY 23\, 2022

SUMMARY:White Lies | Live Performance
DESCRIPTION:White Lies\nFree | Limited Seating \nFebruary 28 @ 6pm / 7pm / 8pm \nCatch the Live Stream version on Periscope @katespeerdance \nWhite Lies is a new performance work that will unfold at RedLine’s Annual Resident Artist Exhibition\, “Near in the Distance” curated by Nicole Caruth. Near in the Distance is the first exhibition in RedLine’s 2020 series entitled “Futurism: Afro & Beyond\,” a lineup of exhibitions and programs inspired by the cultural genre known as Afrofuturism. The 2020 resident artist exhibition features works that explore important issues of our time\, including surveillance\, cultural erasure\, environmental degradation\, gender equity\, and productivity. The exhibition considers the social and cultural forces that shape our lives now and influence fears and hopes for the near future. \nWhite Lies focuses on two unassumed daily factors in my life: whiteness and surveillance. Google searches\, airport screenings\, emails\, facial recognition\, Facebook posts\, exist as white noise\, a constant invisible force on the periphery. What if the technology of the cloud\, the physical invasiveness of surveillance\, and the imprint of white privilege were foregrounded. What white lies do I tell to feel safe and secure? The work features sound design by Ben Coleman and is informed with collaborator Kayla Hamilton.

SUMMARY:Radius of Transmission
DESCRIPTION:I am performing in Ondine Geary‘s new work Radius of Transmission\, a multidisciplinary\, site-specific exploration of grief in three parts. It translates the strangeness of being-in-grief into new contexts\, one that uses live performance\, technology and installation to similarly dislodge audience members from normative states of experience. (absent): Part II is a four-mile\, site-specific drive that uses both the metaphor and means of radio technology to insist that\, in grief\, empty space is not nothing. (abraded): Part III is a dance that shifts the frame from “those gone” to “those who go on” and proclaims grief as inextricably linked to living. \n(absent) & (abraded): Parts II & III occur in sequence Wednesday thru Saturday\, September 4-7\, 2019. \nPart II takes place inside your car. It begins at sunset at this location in North Boulder on: \n\n\nWednesday\, September 4\, at 7:27 pm \n\n\nThursday\, September 5\, at 7:26 pm \n\n\nFriday\, September 6\, at 7:24 pm \n\n\nSaturday\, September 7\, at 7:23 pm \n\n\nand continues along this route to this location\, where Part III occurs. \nTickets are sold per car\, not per person\, and provide admission to Parts II & III for all in the car. Carpooling is encouraged (for the environment & the wallet)! For more specifics and to purchase tickets\, visit the project’s website.

SUMMARY:Untitled | Featured Artist Kate Speer
DESCRIPTION:Untitled Final Fridays is the DAM’s monthly late-night program featuring unconventional experiences developed in collaboration with local creatives and community members. \nAugust’s Untitled event highlights the creative practice of performance and dance artist Kate Speer\, with the theme “A(me)ricana\,” inspired by The Light Show. \nYou’re invited to the final “art-out” of the summer with all the fixings: baseball\, apple pie\, iced-cold beer\, and happenings that examine the imagined America so near-and-dear-and-sometimes-with-fear-to-our-hearts. Kick-up your feet with country\, soul\, and contemporary line dances\, folklórico\, and interactive installations that shed light on your American dream and mine. Inspired by The Light Show and the creative practice of Kate Speer.

SUMMARY:Workshop: The Impact Between Words
DESCRIPTION:A workshop facilitated by Kate Speer & Kayla Hamilton \n\nHow do you hear and see ideas in the room?\nHow do you feel your instinctual impulse?\nHow do words shape your lived experience of the world?\n\nThis workshop will play with words\, text\, and personal narratives to craft parameters to explore the relationship of these ingredients in time and space. We will cycle through creating and sharing to have moments of discussion and dialogue around what we are sensing or not sensing. Layering sensory and textual elements into our parameters to play with how they reveal new interpretations and impact our performative presence. The dynamic pull between your intent and our interpretations will expand these explorations into multiple possibilities. Open to literary practices\, 2D or 3D art\, movement\, or other artistic interests and disciplines for an embodied experience accessible to all bodies. \n  \nRedLine is wheelchair accessible\, there’s a ramp at the front entrance (on 24th Street) and the facilities is all one level with an accessible bathroom open to the public. For an ASL interpreter\, audio describer\, translator\, or any other accommodation you will need to fully participate in this workshop\, please request by Sunday\, February 17th\, 2019 (email: kate@katespeerdance.org; phone: 303-296-4448). \n  \nKayla Hamilton is an artist\, producer\, and educator originally from Texarkana\, Texas and now reside in Bronx\, NY. SUMMARY:Americana: Entitled @ Beyond the Studio Doors
DESCRIPTION:Americana: Entitled (solo version) performed at RedLine’s Beyond the Studio Doors. \nAmericana: Entitled is a dance work\, choreographed by Kate Speer\, that is performed upon a deteriorating landscape of the United States. As the dance progresses\, the dancers’ footprints through molasses leave tracks\, lines\, and divisions across the landscape. With an original music score by composer Michael Clark\, the sound mixes nostalgic American rock with abrasive\, distorted guitar riffs to create a dystopian atmosphere. \nEntitled is part of the Americana creative series that exposes the underpinnings of collective American nostalgia\, particularly white America. In this version\, the emphasis is on the self-indulgence of white culture\, here represented through Western concert dance\, and the destruction–the divisions and lines–created across the United States. Before Western settlers\, there were no maps\, lines of ownership or division of land\, at least in Western understanding. Now there are highways\, state lines\, reservations controlling Native resources\, the list is endless. This brief performance work isolates the indulgence of “art-for-beauty’s sake” against the lasting impact it may leave behind.

SUMMARY:square product theatre: Celebration\, Florida by Greg Wohead
DESCRIPTION:February 6 – 9 | Carsen Theater (GA)$24 | $15 (Student) | $20 (Senior)  *All tickets $30 at the door!*Age Guideline: 12+\n\n\n\nFebruary 7:\nMark Collins and Kate Speer (We’ve never met!!!!!)\n\nFeaturing two unrehearsed performers who have never met\, CELEBRATION\, FLORIDA by Greg Wohead is a quietly surreal show for anyone who has ever missed anyone or anything. Veering between reality and simulation\, the piece orbits around ideas of surrogacy; a stand-in to replace a person you miss\, a re-creation of an experience you can’t stop thinking about\, nostalgia for a place that perhaps never existed. Greg will speak to the audience through two performers using pre-recorded audio and headphones. They will know almost nothing about the show when they walk onstage.

SUMMARY:The Bedroom: Performance Night
DESCRIPTION:Performances By: \n\nKate Speer — katespeerdance.org \nOndine Geary — ondine.dance \nLaura Ann Samuelson — lauraannsamuelson.com\n\nThis one-time special event is a showcase for three local performance artists inside the work of Kenzie Sitterud’s The Kitchen Table and The Bedroom\, two large-scale immersive installations. This interactive experience bridges the gap between performance and installation art in a gallery setting. Please join us for a night of movement. Donations are welcome. \nIn The Bedroom\, Kenzie Sitterud confronts notions of the gender binary and codified identity norms. Their work is important in today’s context of identity politics and investigates the question of what it means to be unapologetically human. The liminal space of the binary is explored in works such as The Kitchen Table\, and speaks to the queer experience of dysphoria and the violence of categorized identity formulation. Sitterud begins to break down the restrictive and suffocating nature of our gendered society and the harm this system causes queer folks\, along with other oppressed peoples today.
